What's the difference between teachers and leaders? Would you look at new knowledge differently if you knew you would be teaching others what you're learning?
Actually I don't think there is much of a difference. As a leader you'll want to share with those that look to you for guidance what you've learned. There are a few things to think about when working to help others.
When gaining new knowledge go into it with the right mindset. Get to know the students you will work with really well. Be willing to show you're vulnerable too. Know in your heart that we are never too old to change the way we understand truths of events that happened in our lives. And opportunity is always awaiting you.
As you go into a new training get yourself into the mindset that you are a leader and others will want to know from you what you learned. They will look to you to guide them into new knowledge. Be sure to ask the questions that others may have as your learning. Be sure to take great notes so you can thoroughly share your gift of knowledge with them. Or better yet, use your new knowledge in action and lead by example. As you're learning think about the students you will influence.
The best way to know your students is to really commit to getting to know each and every person you work with. Have you ever met someone new and spent an hour with them and now you know all about them? Relationships take time and effort. Be sure to make the time and get to know your students so as a leader you can better deliver the knowledge they need to grow.
Some entrepreneurs might give up at the thought of doing this. They may feel they just don't have the time, energy or stamina it takes to really get to know the people they work with. But I know this isn't you, you are a determined leader and teacher that really cares about other people and you want to make a difference.
Now, if you were to think, hey I'm a great leader and I have a plethora of knowledge to share and you walked right up to someone you don't know and started telling them everything they need to know to improve their lives, how do you suppose that would go? Think about how you would feel if someone did that to you. Naturally you would feel as if they reached right into your personal things and started taking stuff. It's essential to build a great relationship so you know exactly what your student needs so you can earn the right to be heard.
As a leader and teacher you also want to be willing to show your students that you are vulnerable too. I mean it's impossible for one person to know everything, right? After all we are only human. We all have our challenges and things we want to improve on. Be sure to allow your student to influence you too. They will be able to relate to you better when they know you're open and vulnerable too.
If you make them believe that you are perfect then how could you possibly be good at fixing things? It's like someone that weighed 80 pounds their whole life telling a 250 pound person how they can best lose weight, how could they know? Be okay with sharing your struggles and where you've come from, it's actually a sign of strength.
The truths of your life and others don't change but understanding of those truths should change as you mature. Always be willing to ask yourself, how can I improve, how can I grow? Be open to gaining new knowledge from everyone around you and then share it with those that are open to using it to improve themselves. But that's the tip; you have to know who really needs whatever you have to share. Build the relationship so you know.
As leaders and teachers we need to do everything in our power to strengthen and improve our vulnerabilities. If we want to help others change for the better then the first thing we have to do is be open to first changing ourselves.
Are we too old to make changes in our lives now? Is it possible to teach old dogs new tricks? Well, we are talking about humans here, not dogs and not tricks. So there is no time like the present, no matter how old we are to make improvements, gain new knowledge we're willing to teach and change for the better. Stay mentally alert, if you don't use it you'll lose it. So keep working out that brilliant mind because others need you.
We are designed for great success. Opportunities are always there for everyone. It just depends which ones are taken. Where there's a will there's a way. If there is no will, then there are only excuses. Approach every opportunity that looks interesting with enthusiasm. They are there if you're looking and it's up to you to choose what to do with it.
Be the great leader and teacher you are and get to work helping others.
